My end of year was bitter-sweet, I made new friends, set new goals/plans, I worked, I volunteered...
come to think of it, I had a pretty exciting December.
There was more “sweet” than “bitter” yet, I dont know why I’m more focused on the “bitter”.
I dont really do “new year’s resolutions” but, I think being more positive and seing the glass half full instead of half empty should be my first change. I did kind of start towards the end of 2018 and obviously failed miserably, so we will add consistency in the mix.
As I am still in Haiti, I thought my first article for 2019 should be about what today means to us Haitians.
January 1st is the celebration of our Independence Day and although it is a pretty interesting topic and a great way to start the year, I realized this part of our history is deeper than just talking about the celebration because, we did not get our independence on January 1st, we actually got it in November then later on, decided to celebrate today.
I’m guessing you guys will have to wait for the real date in order to read the full article, in November 2019. I will also take the opportunity to talk about why we eat/drink a soup made of squash and other vegetables, for the occasion also.
Since I’ll be talking about the good stuff later on this year, as I am writing this while laying on my couch, I think It would be best if we gave ourselves advice for the new year.
Advice that we will note and try really hard to remember through out the year.
We already mentioned staying positive and consistant so let’s find other things, shall we?
How about to get things done by any means necessary? This is for the people, including me that have all these amazing ideas then we get lost with other activities, we lose motivation or we postpone them because “something came up”.
Something will always come up, several times people talk to me about their projects and I’m the one that does the followup like “hey, I’m ready, when are we starting?”
and I get replies such as “yeah yeah it’s coming, let me just finish this & that, I’ll get back to you.”
Then, I actually never hear back from them.
Let’s not be like that, if it’s your project, if it’s a goal or plan that actually means something to you, GET IT DONE.
My fourth advice would be to take care of yourself, not just pretending but, actually doing something about your body and your mind because both of them are equally important if the mind isn’t more.
The fifth advice should be right next to staying positive and it’s to not let sh*t get to us. People talk sh*t when they are bored, jealous, envious and so on. If you take time to listen to what people have to say about you, you’ll never move on. Sure, it’s good to do some self-reflection but if you consider whatever you’re doing is okay then keep doing it.
Only YOU will have to deal with the consequences, only YOU will have to do something about your issue, just like only YOU is depressed and sad when you listen to your peers talking non-sense about you.
Love yourself, work on those insecurities, flaws that you notice about yourself. It’s no one else’s job to work on them for you, your friends/family/significant other can try and be supportive but it will never be their job. All they can do is point out what they think should be changed, nothing more.
Stay nice, often we get defensive and rude because someone hurts our feelings, or we try to do people dirty like they do to us - this ain’t it chief!
Don’t get out of character because of people that don’t even matter in the first place.
It’s so easy to give advice but now comes the real challenge.

The year of 2018 is over, let it go. Stop replaying the bad stuff that happened to you throughout the year and focus on the good things 2019 will bring to you.
The year of 2019 is about GROWTH, POSITIVITY, CONSISTENCY and whatever else you think YOU need. It’s all about YOU because only YOU matter.
