All our lives we have heard about beauty pageants, Miss Universe competitions and so on. Obviously, there are similar contests for men however, there's not much light shed on them like the female ones even less, in countries like Haiti.
Consequently, I decided to write about a wonderful, accomplished young man who I believe is destined to achieve far more greater things than he has already.
Ghaël Jean-Louis
Ghaël is a 23 year old full time Political Sciences student and Fashion/Fitness Model. He is curently halfway through getting his Bachelor Degree, he is interested in International Relations and Diplomacy. Ghaël aspires to become a successful Consul/Ambassador/Diplomate of his country and create ties and pacts with other countries in order to provide more opportunities for Haitians.
As I mentionned before, Ghaël is also a professional Fashion and Fitness Model. He has been in the industry for about 4 years now. Although he is constantly working hard to better himself and get more opportunities, so far his career has been very interesting. He had the chance to participated in many different types of projects such as fashion shows, countless photoshoots, a couple of commercials here and there, music videos, humanitarian events, pageants and so on.
"The Mister International Organization empowers men to develop the confidence they need to achieve their personal best. A confident man has the power to make real change, starting in his local community with the potential to reach a global audience. We encourage every man to challenge himself and find his confidence, and continue to define what it means to be Distinctively Handsome." -Mister International Organization
How did you enter the contest to become Mister International?
Ghaël: Well First I have to say that the usual process to becoming Miss or Mister of your country is through pre-pageants where contestants have to go through different rounds and events. At the end of the preliminaries, the best competitor is reveiled and receives their title.
This was not the case with Mister International since unfortunately Haiti has very few organisations pushing the Modeling Industry and many concentrate mostly on female models.
It happened as one day, I was scrolling through my social media (I follow tons of modeling pages) and I came across a post where the Mister International Organization had launched a virtual casting to find the next Mister International Haiti. Without hesitation, I sent them my information and pictures. Two months later, I received an official letter from the Organization congratulating me for winning the Title of Mister International Haiti 2018.
Fun Fact: I will add that this is in fact, Ghaël's second title, he participated in the Mister Model pageant as Mister Model Haiti back in 2016. The competition was held in New Delhi, India. There was about 40 countries competeting and Ghaël finished in the top 16.
What do you consider your biggest accomplishment so far?
Ghaël: That is a difficult question but, I think until now the highlights of my career must be: 1) Winning my second Title since that makes me the only Haitian Male Model to have been able to be Mister twice so, that's one for the books.
2) As a humanitarian, I participated in different events whether it was to raise awareness or simply lend a helping hand to the less fortunate.
I was happy to collaborate with Gaelle Bien Aimé last year in the Festival Negès Mawon, a movement that empowers women, their main goal is to obtain equal rights and opportunities for women in Haiti.
3) I was also the main actor along with Darline Desca in the music video for her song “Feeling”.
Even though this song is in creole, the video is worth the watch so, take a look at Ghaël and his work.
What is your ultimate goal you have yet to reach?
Ghaël: It would be a dream come true to pose for the top brands in the industry and being parts of the biggest fashion shows out there. To be a Calvin Klein model sounds very good too (haha).
One of the most challenging experiences your career had to face?
Ghaël: The most challenging part of my career has to be keeping my body in shape. I love to eat and some deserts like chocolate, I just can't resist but, to counter all those calories, I do alot of physical exercices, about 5 to 6 times a week.
How did it feel to be chosen to be part of the jury for Miss Haiti?
Ghaël: I felt very honored to be part of the Jury of Miss Haiti. To be able to sit next to people that have already made their name in the industry was a sign of accomplishment to me. I was very glad to be able to put my experiences to use, collaborate with the others in order to pick the rightful winner.
You are now considered an Haitian Ambassador, how do you plan to use your title to help your country?
Ghaël: I want to promote Haiti to the world by sharing our rich culture and history, our beautiful beaches, caves, waterfalls, everything that the international media doesn't. By doing that I wish to not only change my countries image but I want to ignite a sense of patriotism inside every Haitian. I also plan to continue participating in humanitarian events as often as I can.
What will be the next step for Ghaël?
Ghaël: The next step is preparations for Mister International. The pageant will be held in February in Singapore, as I still have a few months ahead of me. Getting my body and mental 100% set is a priority, as this time my objective is to make it to the top 3. Afterwards, it will be finding more modeling jobs abroad as I feel I have already proved myself on a National scale.
Word of advice for anyone who aspires to follow the same career path you did?
Ghaël: Being a model is a not an easy job, it requires a lot of patience and determination especially in third world countries like Haiti. I believe the best advice I can give to anyone is to have a trustworthy team (Manager, agent) to work closely with, it's impossible to do everything on your own as apart from the shows, shoots, etc. theres a lot of planning, negotiating and contacting to do also.
Words can't express how proud I am of Ghaël, his accomplishments and also the fact that he gets to represent Haiti in one the biggest male contests to ever exist. I hope you guys enjoyed getting to know Our Future Mister International as much as I did.
